Its winding streets and narrow pedestrianised alleyways mixed with the aroma of roasting suckling pig leave a powerful impression on the visitor. The old city is also surrounded by walls built in the 10th century BC, probably on its original Roman base. The city is a UNESCO world heritage site in 1985.
